Batida de Guineo Protein Smoothie

Batida de Guineo Protein Smoothie

Every Dominican grew up with a batida. A cold glass of something blended smooth and sweet, made with whatever fruit was on the counter and milk from the fridge. Guineo was always in that rotation - ripe, soft, fragrant bananas that needed no added sugar because they were already sweet enough on their own.

This version keeps everything that made the original worth drinking and adds what your body actually needs. Frozen guineo for that thick, almost ice-cream texture. Almond butter for healthy fats and staying power. Vanilla protein powder that disappears completely into the flavor. Cinnamon because it has always belonged there.

Drink it at 6am before anyone else is awake and it is breakfast. Drink it at noon after a workout and it is recovery. It does not matter what you call it or when you drink it - 28g of protein in under 2 minutes of actual effort is the right answer to a lot of mornings and a lot of afternoons.

Your abuela made hers with love. You are making yours with that and a little more intention.

Protein Score

Base protein: 28g per serving | Protein Tier: Powerhouse

28g of complete protein in a glass that takes 2 minutes to make. The protein powder anchors it, the almond butter contributes additional protein alongside healthy fats, and the banana provides natural potassium and magnesium for muscle recovery and cramp prevention - especially important for women over 45 who train regularly or are managing fatigue. For bariatric patients this is one of the most efficient protein delivery formats available - high volume of protein, easy to consume, gentle on the stomach.

PROTEIN BOOST OPTIONS

This already hits Powerhouse at 28g. These options push it further or add specific functional benefits:

  • Add 2 tablespoon hemp seeds before blending - adds 6g complete protein, zero flavor change, smooth texture
  • Use whole milk instead of almond milk - adds 4g protein per serving and a creamier, more traditional batida texture
  • Add ¼ cup full-fat Greek yogurt per serving - adds 5g protein, thickens the smoothie significantly, and adds a subtle tang that works well with the banana and cinnamon
  • Use a 30g protein scoop instead of 20-25g - the simplest boost with no texture or flavor change.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS RECIPE

  • Under 2 minutes from freezer to glass - this is the fastest high-protein breakfast in the entire Strength & Sazon recipe library
  • Frozen guineo creates a naturally thick, almost soft-serve texture without added ice cream or thickeners - freeze your bananas the night before and the blender does all the work
  • Potassium and magnesium from the banana work together to support muscle recovery and prevent cramping - critical for women over 45 who are strength training or managing fatigue
  • Almond butter contributes vitamin E, magnesium, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that slow digestion and extend satiety well past the morning
  • Cinnamon is not just flavor here - it supports blood sugar regulation by improving insulin sensitivity, which makes this a smart choice before or after any meal
  • Bariatric-friendly from day one - soft, smooth, easy to consume in small volumes, and protein-dense enough to support muscle preservation at any post-op stage

The Dominican banana shake rebuilt as a post-workout powerhouse and a grab-and-go breakfast. Frozen guineo, natural almond butter, vanilla protein powder, and cinnamon blended thick and cold. 28g protein per serving. Done in 2 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe bananas guineo, frozen - freeze overnight for best texture
  • 4 cups unsweetened almond milk or whole milk for higher calories and protein
  • 4 scoops vanilla whey or plant protein powder 80-100g protein total, 20-25g per scoop
  • 4 tablespoon natural almond butter no added sugar or oil
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups ice
  • Optional: 2 teaspoon honey or maple syrup if bananas are not fully ripe

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a blender in this order: almond milk first, then frozen bananas, protein powder, almond butter, cinnamon, vanilla, and ice last. Adding liquid first protects the blender blade and ensures even blending.
  • Blend on high 45 to 60 seconds until completely smooth and creamy. If the blender struggles, add almond milk one tablespoon at a time until it moves freely.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness with honey if needed. Very ripe frozen bananas will need nothing extra.
  • Pour into tall glasses and dust the top of each glass with extra cinnamon. Serve immediately.

TEXTURE TIPS

  • Freeze your bananas the night before - this is the single most important step. Fresh bananas make a thin, watery smoothie. Frozen bananas create a thick, almost ice-cream-like consistency that no amount of extra ice can replicate. Peel them before freezing and store in a zip-lock bag.
  • Add liquid first, always. Dry ingredients on the bottom with no liquid will seize the blender blade and burn the motor. Almond milk goes in first, every time.
  • If the smoothie is too thick to blend freely, add almond milk one tablespoon at a time - not all at once. One tablespoon is often all it needs.
  • Do not over-blend. 45-60 seconds on high is enough. Over-blending heats the smoothie, melts the frozen banana, and you end up with warm, thin liquid instead of a cold thick shake.
  • For bariatric patients: blend an extra 15 seconds to make the texture completely lump-free. Any remaining chunk of frozen banana can be uncomfortable at early post-op stages.

MEAL PREP HOW-TO

  • The only real prep for this recipe is freezing the bananas. Keep a bag of peeled frozen guineos in the freezer at all times and this smoothie is always 3 minutes away.
  • Batch prep option: blend all 4 servings at once and divide into mason jars. Seal and refrigerate up to 4 hours. Shake or stir before drinking - the smoothie separates slightly as it sits, which is normal.
  • Bariatric portioning: a ½ cup serving delivers approximately 7g protein in a small, smooth, easy-to-drink volume. Start there and increase as tolerated. This is one of the most bariatric-compatible recipes in this collection because the texture is completely uniform and requires no chewing.
  • Freeze ripe bananas in batches whenever you see them going spotty - that is peak sweetness for a batida. Black-spotted guineos are not overripe, they are ready.
  • Time-saving tip: pre-measure your protein powder scoops into small bags or containers on Sunday. Monday through Friday, you open one bag, add it to the blender with everything else, and you are done.

STORAGE TIPS

  • Best consumed immediately after blending for peak texture and temperature.
  • If needed, refrigerate in a sealed jar up to 4 hours. Shake or stir well before drinking as separation is normal.
  • Do not freeze the finished smoothie - the texture breaks down completely upon thawing and becomes grainy and watery.
  • Keep peeled ripe bananas in a sealed freezer bag up to 3 months. Label with the date. Rotate when you buy fresh bananas - freeze the ripest ones first.
